Forty-nine soldiers from Lift Three of Chalk Two arrived in the country yesterday morning after a year in Sinai.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho welcomed them at Namaka in Nadi, saying he was grateful to see them back.

Colonel Qiliho commended the soldiers for their work in keeping up the name of the Fiji military.

“Sinai is one of the volatile areas where we are part of the peacekeeping duties; we are always concerned with the Commander (Mosese Tikoitoga) because of the situation.

“One year you are away and it is not easy, a lot of temptation and upheaval could have happened. Golan Heights are not so scary.

“We thank you all for returning alive and thank you for the passion and doing your duties well.

“Go home and enjoy your wealth you gained but put to good use so that there is comfort for the family and children,” Colonel Qiliho said.

Chalk leader Major Sirilo Pate, originally from Tunuloa in Cakaudrove, was happy to be back home with family and friends.

“It was quite difficult because of the time we spent away from our family and then the changes in situation in Sinai,” he said.

“We managed to cope with it and we are happy to be back here in one piece and we are looking forward to meeting our families.”
