A group of crop and livestock extension officers from the Northern Division have been urged to inform farmers on the importance of proper cropping system.

Ministry of Agriculture, farm management principal agriculture officer Joape Waqabaca said this during a weeklong  workshop. It is facilitated by the Land Resource Planning Division.

The workshop is held at the Friendly North Inn in Labasa and was opened by the Principal Agriculture Officer North, John Cox.

“There is a need to train staff in the proper use of farming systems analysis in order to formulate project proposals in the ministry,” Mr Waqabaca said.

“These officers or farm managers need to develop a farm plan focussing on improved natural resource management for sustainable farming production.

“And also to promote farming as a business and a rewarding form of employment to alleviate poverty in Fiji.”

The learning outcomes for the participants would be to develop farm business plans for farmers by preparation of property reports, management reports and better farm plans.

“They would develop project proposals and interventions that will address farmer’s problems and the market opportunities for agricultural commodities,” he said.

“Also highlight the farmers role in the value chain development and the need to work together to increase production and adding value in meeting the market demand.”
