The French naval frigate (ship), Le Vendemiaire which has been in Fiji since last week, will continue to work in partnership with Pacific island nations.

This includes maritime surveillance for French Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and relief assistance.

Captain Herve Siret said “We are a French Armed Forces frigate and we are in charge of maritime surveillance for French EEZ.

“We are working with all the partners in the Pacific Ocean and neighbours of New Caledonia.”

Captain Siret said they also aim to exchange information and help train Pacific navy personnel.

He said they assisted in rehabilitation work in Vanuatu after the destruction of Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam.

The Le Vendemiaire has a helicopter and advanced radar and communications equipment.

Crew member Sub-Lieutenant Commander Nathaniel Guyomard said, “Our daily lives are very different from the missions in which we are involved in.”

On Sunday the vessel, a light monitoring frigate (“frégate de surveillance”) of the French Marine Nationale, was open for public viewing. Yesterday it was open for students.

She is the fifth ship of the Floréal class, and is named after Vendémiaire, the first month of theRepublican Calendar.

She sails to New Caledonia tomorrow.
