Malaysian Court Date For Nirmal

Fijian woman Christin Nirmal, 26, of Narere, Nasinu, who was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into Malaysia earlier this year, will appear in court in Kuala Lumpur on June 1.

The acting Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Esala Nayasi, confirmed this yesterday.

“The Legal Aid Office in Kuala Lumpur will represent the 26-year-old woman when she appears in court,” Mr Nayasi said.

He said they had received a report which highlighted three things;

i) There were no fingerprint on the bag.

ii) No name tag on the bag.

iii) Her blood is free from drug.

Right now, he said, they were waiting for the chemist report on what was in the bag.

About 1.51 kilograms of methamphetamine was allegedly found inside Ms Nirmal’s bag at the Kuala Lumpur Airport while she was travelling from Hong Kong.

She is being held under Section 39 (B) of Malaysian Dangerous Drugs Act of 1952.

Carrying more than 50 grams of methamphetamines, also known as ice, can warrant the death penalty in Malaysia.

Earlier it was  reported Ms Nirmal had been befriended online by a man, had gone to Hong Kong to join him, and had been asked to carry a bag with “samples”.

Mr Nayasi said officials from the Fijian Mission in Malaysia had been liasing with Ms Nirmal, her family in Fiji and relevant authorities and facilitated her legal representation.

Mr Nayasi said Ms Nirmal was in good health.

Ms Nirmal is a mother of three children – her eldest daughter is in Year Five while her youngest son is 10-months-old.
