Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) personnel who are working in the civil service have resigned as soldiers.

This was confirmed by the Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration, Timoci Natuva while responding to an oral question raised by Opposition member, Ratu Isoa Tikoca in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Natuva was asked to clarify as to when RFMF personnel working in the Fiji Police Force and the civil service would return to the barracks.

“All RFMF personnel have resigned and are now being fully paid by the respective ministries they are in except for personal staff to the Prime Minister, the bodyguards for ministers and four officers on attachment  at the Ministry of Defence which has been a practice from the past,” Mr Natuva said.

“They resign and follow the same process of posts being advertised and they go through the process of selection.”

Mr Natuva said it was a protocol for ministers to have bodyguards.

While responding to a supplementary question raised by Oppositional Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa as to why ministers still needed a bodyguard since Fijians now live in a democratic country, Mr Natuva replied, “It is up to the ministers themselves and it is a protocol also. You either have the military or Police as bodyguard.”

Mr Natuva said they hoped to table the National Security and Defence Framework in Parliament in September.
