The people of Rabi are expecting the Victoria Marine Shipping Limited’s MV Sea Rakino vessel on their shores today.

This after the islanders raised concerns that there was lack of shipping services to Rabi which contributed to less economical activity on the island.

Rabi Island Council executive director, David Christopher highlighted that the route taken by the MV Sea Rakino is not a viable option for them.

The MV Sea Rakino was awarded the tender to service the Cikobia route under the government franchise scheme which includes Malau, Cawaro, Nukusa, Nukudamu, Nabouono, Vunikodi, Cikobia Island, Naqelelevu, Saqani, Lakeba, Tawake, Wainiika and Yasawa.

The island council had hoped that the route would also include Taveuni and Savusavu where they usually take their produce.

“We requested if we could be connected to Taveuni which is a viable option for us because it is safer and faster for us to take our produce,” Mr Christopher said.

“Currently, we spend a lot of money to take our produce across to Savusavu and Taveuni in small boats and carriers.

“With no shipping services to the island and lack of markets, production of yaqona, bio-fuel, virgin coconut oil and fish are low.”

Mr Christopher said the new shipping service would help boost the production of these commodities.

He  had said earlier during a media tour to Rabi that when they start getting shipping services once a month, the people of Rabi would organise themselves in terms of transporting their produce to available markets.

The MV Sea Rakino departed Narain Jetty in Suva last Saturday and is expected to be in Rabi today.

It will then leave for Saqani towards Natewa Bay, then Lakeba, Tawake, Wainiika, Yasawa, Vunikodi, Nabouono, Nukudamu, Nukusa and Cawaro in Vanua Levu.
