Australian super middleweight boxer Renold Quinlan has signed-up to fight undefeated Jonathan Gonzalez Ortiz of Puerto Rico at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre on June 27.

Quinlan whose mum hails from Viwa in Bau, Tailevu said fighting the world-rated boxer is the only way for him to go up the ladder.

“All the top super middleweight boxers in Australia are ducking Ortiz but Renold wants to get it on with him,” said Quinlan’s uncle, Lepani Wilson from Sydney yesterday. Wilson said Team Quinlan have been training hard for this most important fight as a win could propel him to the world stage.

Helping in his preparation is ring tactician Paul Toweel who in 1986 fought Sakaraia Ve at the National Gymnasium in Suva for the South Pacific middleweight title.

Ortiz who has arrived in Sydney in the weekend to prepare for the fight boasts a proud record of 18 wins with 14 by knockouts.

“We are confident of winning this one but time will tell,” Wilson added.
