A two-week stint with the French Navy never crossed Sub-Lieutenant Sikeli Naqoli’s mind.

The 35-year-old Fiji Navy officer leaves today on the French Navy vessel Le Vendemiaire, which is bound for Vanuatu and then its home port of New Caledonia.

Sub-Lieutenant Naqoli replaces Sub-Lieutenant Apakuki Tukana, who returned last week after a five-week stint on the French Navy vessel.

The Fijian and French navies have stepped up the fight against illegal fishing, among other things and have done various joint exercises in our waters.

Sub-Lieutenant Naqoli, who hails from Qoma, Namena in Tailevu, is excited about his attachment.

“We will leave our shores and travel towards Vanuatu until we reach New Caledonia,” he said.

“I have been in the naval service for nine years now and I am going on this two weeks attachment onboard the Le Vendemiaire to upgrade my knowledge and skills on my duty.

“I have always had the passion of working extra hard and my advice to youths would be to always believe in who you are, and what you can do and achieve, know your potential. Let the sky be your limit.”
