A team of 40 people will arrive in the country soon to build an Earthship at Vatia Beach Resort between Ba and Tavua.

The project is an initiative of an American organisation, Earthship Biotecture.

The Earthship is a low cost, typhoon and earthquake resistant shelter.

“This will be the first one built in Fiji. We have built this all over the world. We understand that there have been so many natural disasters in Fiji and the Government has lost thousands in monetary terms at this time,” said Earthship Biotecture representative Deborah Binder.

“This will revolutionise the way of building in Fiji.”

The shelter is being designed from America and is built out of recycled tyres with dirt, cardboards and bottles.

“Rubbish on earth has become so common that it has become a natural resource of our earth. We use tyres filled with dirt because it will create a heavy brick like foundation.

“The shelter also collects and stores rainwater.”

The construction work will begin on June 1 and finish on June 15.

Local builders are invited to be part of this project by attending their open house sessions from June 7 to 13.
