Qarase Claims $600K More

Former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase is claiming further entitlements totalling $637,926.36 relating to expenses for telephone, medical and support staff.

This is on top of the $583,263.64 (including gratuity) that was paid to him by the Government on December 18, 2014. Last year’s lump payment was to settle all outstanding pension payments since

December 2006. According to the Attorney-General and Minister for Finance, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Mr Qarase now receives a fortnightly pension of $2443.78.

This fortnightly pension includes the 20 per cent increase that the Government granted all pensioners in 2012 and another 20 per cent in 2015. The matter was brought before Parliament yesterday through a question from Leader of the Opposition, Ro Teimumu Kepa. In response, the A-G said all outstanding pension payments owed to Mr Qarase had been settled.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum cited correspondence between the Fijian Cabinet Office and Mr Qarase to show that the Government wanted to expedite the issue of settling the outstanding other benefits.

He explained that relevant benefits for Mr Qarase were covered under the Prime Minister’s Pensions Act 1994. The specific extra benefits claimed by Mr Qarase were covered under Section 9 of the Act.

However, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that automatic payments for the extra benefits could not be done without verification and that all necessary documentation needed to be provided to avoid audit queries.
