Security Checks For Fruit Fly Pest

Security checks have been instituted at Oinafa Jetty on Rotuma to prevent the spread of fruit flies into Fiji.

The fruit flies B. kirki and B. obscura which are present in Rotuma. Assistant Minister for Agriculture Joeli Cawaki said the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) was maintaining strict surveillance to ensure that the fruit flies were contained on the island. “BAF restricts people travelling to and from Rotuma to bring any fruits from Rotuma to Fiji because fruit flies pose significant threat to Fiji’s fresh vegetables and fruits and produce exports,” Mr Cawaki said.

He said the surveillance would be in place for some time because the Ministry of Agriculture and BAF were still conducting research.

People found in breach of this biosecurity regulation are liable for prosecution and penalties.
