‘Sinai Allowance Will Increase’

Allowances for soldiers on tour to Sinai will increase, says the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

“The Government approved this year that the allowance be increased to $100 a day and for next year to be moved up to $130 per day, Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho told some 49 soldiers bound for peacekeeping duties to Sinai yesterday morning.

“This will be the same as the allowance that they will be getting in Iraq and the Golan Heights. Due to the increase of instability in the situation in Sinai over time, it means more care needs to be taken.”

He said the Sinai area of operations had become volatile where our soldiers were located.

“In comparison to Iraq, they are located in safe areas, the green zone areas in particular, which is a heavily guarded area,” Colonel Qiliho said.

“In the Golan Heights they are in the Israeli side of the tactical fence rather than the Syrian side where all the action is happening.

“We are thankful to the Government for increasing that and that has been back dated to the first of January this year.

“For that to move up to $130 a day will be from January next year,” Colonel Qiliho confirmed.

Around 50 soldiers are expected to arrive on Sunday morning. The last troop of 50 soldiers will leave our shores for Sinai on Wednesday, May 27.
