The Attorney-General’s Office is challenging the appointment to Parliament of Mikaele Leawere of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA).

The A-Gs Office is taking the Fijian Electoral Commission to court, questioning Mr Leawere’s eligibility.

Mr Leawere worked previously with the Fijian Teacher’s Association (FTA) as one of its senior officers.

He replaced the late Ratu Viliame Tagivetaua who passed away in March this year.

In the first High Court sitting yesterday, preliminary matters were sorted out before the next court hearing date for next Thursday.

Devanesh Sharma is representing the A-Gs Office while John Apted is representing Mr Leawere.

The Fijian Electoral Commission is expected to nominate a lawyer by next week when the case is called again.
