Businessman Bobby Khan and his wife Azreena Khan.

Plans are in the pipeline by an investor to construct a shopping plaza right opposite the Nadi International Airport.

Bobby Khan is a Fijian who returned from New Zealand a few years ago and has since spent millions investing in two supermarket outlets, an events centre and a resort.

His next big plan is the construction of Airport Plaza which is located just opposite Nadi International Airport and next to Tokatoka Resort on the main Queens Highway.

The complex, to be similar to the Damodar City in Suva but at a bit smaller scale, will see $12 million being invested by Mr Khan.

Mr Khan has partnered with Bank of Baroda as banking partner.

Construction is expected to begin some time this year or once the road upgrades are completed in the area.

Some features

This complex will consist of supermarket, hardware and a multiple retail outlets.

Mr Khan said the complex will also have offices and food court.

He further confirmed they have been in talks with some branded outlets from overseas who would like to come and lease a retail outlet in the area.

“This will attract a lot of overseas brands to come and invest in that area,” he said.

Location

Mr Khan said his decision to invest in the complex was based on the lack of shopping facilities in and around the airport area.

“If we look outside Nadi Airport, it is quite dull. There are just hotels which is the reason we are building the shopping complex,” he said.

“This location has been chosen because we have seen we need – Nadi Airport area needs. This kind of investment badly so we have decided to go and boost this area.

“So if the flight is delayed, people will have a place to relax, eat and shop. It will keep a lot of traffic out of the airport.

“It will be something like Damodar City and will take at least 24 months to build.”

Background

Mr Khan migrated to New Zealand 27 years ago and came back when the Government introduced the dual citizenship for former Fijians.

He says he was a car dealer in New Zealand, owner of Nippon Auto Limited. As well he owned a finance company.

But in 2012, Mr Khan said he sold the business in New Zealand to bring back the money into Fiji to invest.

“The attractive Government policies of Fiji attracted me to come back and invest. So far in the last four years, my investment in this country would be well over $10 million,” he said.
