A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition at the Labasa Hospital after he found lying on the road near his home with serious injuries from what is believed to be a hit-and-run accident.

What started as a happy preparation to a shopping trip ended in a serious accident at Basoga in Labasa on Tuesday afternoon.

Jone Turagavou (Junior), 10, is recovering at the Labasa Hospital Intensive Care Unit after he was found lying on the road with injuries suspected to have been hit by a vehicle.

Police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri said police were investigating the case and seeking information from members of the community.

Turagavou’s father and his namesake said his son was in critical condition.  “There are signs of body movements, but he is still in critical condition and all we pray for is for him to live,” he said. “We were getting ready that Tuesday afternoon to go shopping while his mother and two other siblings were getting ready when he took the lead.

“In that short period he got into an accident, of which we don’t really know much about, and the shopping trip to the nearby shopping centre at Basoga was cancelled.

“They came straight to the hospital where he was admitted at the ICU unit. We heard stories from the neighbours about the accident, but we don’t know the truth about what actually happened.”

Turagavou, a student of Labasa Primary School, was rushed to the hospital by a man driving a car at about 5.30pm.
