The search for Fiji’s next representative to the Miss World begins on June 6.

This year, organisers are hoping to attract applicants from far and wide. Last year, Australian finalist Asena Rokotuiwai, who was one of the many international applicants, finished second and also scooped the Top Model award.

Applicants from as far as the US, Chile and the UK applied for last year’s title, which was won by Taveuni beauty, Charlene Tafuna’i, who is the reigning Miss World Fiji.

The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation and the Fiji Sun have been confirmed as the exclusive media partners for this year’s event.

The Miss World Fiji platform continues to provide many opportunities for local young women. In 2013, Duane Gazi, director of Model Scouting at Trump Model Management in New York was brought in to judge the contest.

A model search conducted by the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation saw Sigatoka beauty, Philippa Steele, discovered and signed to Trump Model Management.

“Supermodel Rachel Hunter was also the guest judge in 2012 and this was the first time for an international model to be involved in a local event,” said managing director Miss World Fiji Lara Chung.

The Miss World Fiji contest will take place from July 20-25 this year at The Pearl South Pacific Resort in Deuba.

This is the third consecutive year in which the resort is hosting the national finals.

Miss World Fiji has also received worldwide attention for its creative photo shoots and colourful costumes that attracted the attention of international bloggers, pageant journalists and the international Miss World Organisation.

“The big reveal photo shoot which we did last year received ‘picture of the day’ and over nine thousand likes on the Miss World Facebook page. Our national costumes have also placed Fiji on the international stage with the Owl costume winning in 2012 and our Kula bird costume placing 10th last year. This is out of 125 participating countries,” Ms Chung said.

Ten national finalists will be selected at the official castings on June 6 before the final competition on July 25.
