The Fiji National University (FNU) aims to secure international accreditation for its engineering courses.

FNU vice-chancellor Professor Ian Rouse said this was one area that the university needed to work on.

“We have a Bachelor of Engineering, but we need significant development. We want the programme to be internationally accredited, but we need the programme, staff, facilities and equipment,” Professor Rouse said.

“There’s a lot that we need to invest in. At the moment we are focusing on the programme. We are buying a significant amount of equipment.

“Government has funded the university through the Higher Education Commission Substantial Grant this year to buy equipment. It will probably at $3 to $4million.”

Professor Rouse said they had asked Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ), the engineers’ accreditation body in NZ to visit Fiji by year end to look at FNU’s engineering courses before they could be internationally recognised.

“We are trying to improve the facilities, renovate, upgrade and buy new equipment,” he said.
