The European Union (EU) has urged the three universities in the country to explore the various opportunities they had to enable educational co-operation.

The universities are the Fiji National University (FNU), University of the South Pacific (USP), and University Fiji (UniFiji).

EU head of delegation Johnny Engell Hansen made this comment after meeting with FNU acting vice-chancellor Professor Ian Rouse and staff members at the Nasinu Campus on Thursday.

He said the universities could look at their various operational projects and apply for assistance.

“We encourage them to look at the possibility and it’s not just to the advantage of the developments on Fiji. If we can get as many universities as possible, it will be very good because we will get very smart people to join research with European universities and everyone will benefit from that,” Mr Hansen said.

“We had a very interesting meeting and this shows the importance that we attach to the collaboration with the university. Not just FNU, but USP and UniFiji as well.

“From the interest and level of participation, there was a huge interest in learning about more and knowing more about how FNU can benefit from collaboration with the European Union.”

Meanwhile, Professor Rouse commended the European Union for all the assistance rendered to the university.

“It was a great opportunity for us to meet with them. They are a key provider for FNU. When you look at the priorities of the European Union till 2020 it’s definitely a focus on education, energy and climate change. They are all important to Fiji and the university.

“It was good to have our senior staff here come out and meet with these people and look at the lots of opportunities that are available and hopefully then more staff will engage to link with universities in Europe and do some really good thing,” he said.
