The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) will soon start   cogeneration system starting at Labasa Mill.

This will earn more money for the mill because of the production of bagasse which will be turned into biofuel which will run the mill and also sell to the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) for public use.

This was highlighted by Divisional Pplanning Officer (DPO) North, Alipate Bolalevu during the first round of the Provincial Development Board (PDP) meeting in Labasa yesterday.

“It will be something that will benefit the North because the mill will produce electricity, not only during crushing season, but also sell power to Fiji Electricity Authority during off-season,” Mr Bolalevu said.

He said the mill aimed to produce 1.2 to 1.3 million tonnes of sugar in the coming years, so there was a need for farmers in the North to plant more sugarcane and utilise vacant land.

“It is a 10 megawatt project while six to seven megawatts will be used in the factory and the rest will be sold to FEA throughout the year.”

Meanwhile, the FEA said so far the project was looking good.

The commission date would be confirmed after next Saturday’s test.
