The building of an international port in the North was discussed during the Provincial Development Board (PDB) meeting in Labasa yesterday.

This was raised by board member Mohammed Rafiq.

“The North really needs its own port because of its vast commodities and resources,” Mr Rafiq said.

He said many farmers in the North had agricultural commodities that could be exported abroad.

Mr Rafiq said it’s difficult and expensive for farmers to send their goods to Suva or Nadi before they are shipped abroad.

Divisional Planning Officer (DPO) North Alipate Bolalevu said an international port facility in the North would help grow its economy.

“For example there is a company in Taveuni that is exporting coconut oil and Kava to international markets, so they have ship them to Suva or Nadi then to overseas markets,” Mr Bolalevu said.
