The concern has been raised to stop uncontrolled sugarcane farm fires.

The Public Service Commission hosted a meeting yesterday to begin an inter-agency effort to stop cane burning.

The Permanent Secretary for PSC and Acting PS  Sugar, Parmesh Chand, said: “We met with the Police and sugar industry two weeks ago and discussed what we can do to prevent uncontrolled fires and the damages these fires do whether intestinally or not.”

It’s not only the work of Police but everyone’s responsibility he said.

“We have good soils and vegetation and must ensure that the future what we have does not get damaged by these unnecessary fires,” he said.

“The sugar industry have a lot of farms which get destroyed by the fires which are either deliberately lit or accidental and once that happen reports get lost and it is already too late because you cannot do anything to the damage and it’s very difficult in many cases because it happens at night or at times people are not seen,” Mr Chand said.

Approximately, Fiji Sugar Corporation recorded the loss of $2 million in sugar cane fires last cane season 1.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said: “The Police did not take this matter seriously because most of the time the suspect was not known to the Police and most cases of fire cannot be determined.

“However, when we took into consideration the economic value of our sugar  to whole Government economy then we have changed our investigation process and we  go deeper in to investigation once the suspect is known to us and  we are treating it seriously,” he said.

All investigation being done now are for last year’s fires.
