Rewa Rice Limited now plans to set up the new rice mill in Dreketi instead of Labasa.

Rewa Rice Mill Manager Ashrit Pratap highlighted this during the Committee for Better Utilisation of Land (CBUL) meeting at Macuata House in Labasa this week.

“The new mill was initially proposed to be set up in Labasa but looking at the production level, it was good to be at Dreketi because the supply from Labasa is very minimal,” Mr Pratap said.

“We have done some investment on our current mill, so the current mill is up and running at the moment.”

Mr Pratap said the company aims to also get another dryer to help the company.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rewa Rice are planning to have a “Rice Day” for rice farmers in the North.

One of the problems rice farmers in Labasa are facing is the lack of storage facilities after harvesting, Mr Pratap said.

“Most farmers are complaining that Rewa Rice is not able to buy their entire paddy at once,” he said.

Mr Pratap noted Rewa Rice does not have the capability to buy the rice all at once.

“So when farmers want to increase the rice production, they need to have proper storage facilities at their farms.”

Looking at the Ministry of Agriculture production figures, Mr Pratap said it was a surprise that the production figures were going down.

He said some of the reasons were the drought the past year, logistics, machinery and shortage of labour.

Mr Pratap noted most rice farmers compared rice operation with Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC).

“But for rice once it is ripe and ready for harvest, you cannot even lose a single day because it starts to fall,” he said.
