Ten Years 6 Months For Rape

A man has been sentenced to 10 years and six months the High Court in Lautoka for raping a child below the age of 13.

The accused, on December 14, 2011, at about 2pm, grabbed the six-year-old girl and  forcefully raped her in a toilet.

The accused was 31 years old at the time the incident took place and was living in the same village as the victim.

He pleaded guilty on May 13 this year.

Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe said by committing such offence the accused not only breached the trust of the child but also of other fellow villagers.

He said sexually assaulting and raping children by known people within their close vicinity was becoming prevalent in the society which needed to be addressed promptly and effectlively, not only through judicial process but also through a wider socio-cultural process.

“Raping an underaged child is the worst form of sexual assault,” Justice Rajasinghe said.

“The adverse psychological effect of such sexual abuse in a growing child cannot be properly evaluated and foreseen, even by psychologists or sociologists.”

Justice Rajasinghe considered this as an aggravating factor and sentenced Veremalumu to 10 years six months imprisonment with a non-parole period of nine years.
