The Commissioner of Police, Bernardus Groenewald, needed 13 stitches on an injury he suffered when he single-handedly confronted a gang of robbers at Distill Bottleshop at Flagstaff in Suva on Thursday.

He told the Fiji Sun yesterday that he had been invited to a function at the Distill Bottleshop.

“Inside the Bottleshop it is L-shaped and I was sitting at the side when I heard a commotion outside,” he said.

“As a policeman I reacted instantly and stood and moved outside,” he said.

He met a masked man and told him to move out.

The Commissioner of Police picked up a chair as the robbers rushed out.

According to Mr Groenewald, the last of them then took a bottle of wine and smashed it on his head.

“I fell down and those in the Bottleshop helped me.”

He said he was just carrying out his job as a policemen and that was to protect the people.

The Commissioner said one of the guests called a doctor and he was attended to at the scene.

The Police Chief of Intelligence and Investigation (CII) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Henry Brown said they had carried out their investigation and it was ongoing.

As of yesterday, eight people had been taken in for questioning on the matter and released.

“We are still carrying out our investigation and cannot divulge any other information,” he said.

ACP Brown said he would reveal more information about the investigation today.

The Fiji Sun visited Flagstaff yesterday where Police had cordoned off the Distill Bottleshop as a crime scene.
