Two Sentenced For Arson

Two men have been sentenced to four years for the charge of arson in different areas.

Emori Naqarase was found guilty on a count of arson and escaping lawful custody while Atunaisa Raralevu was convicted on a count of arson by the High Court in Suva yesterday.

Naqarase, 34, on December 8, 2012, in Naitasiri set the home of a 51-year-old man’s house on fire. The incident took place after a mataqali dispute after which the accused was arrested.

Judge Justice Salesi Temo said the accused showed utter disregard for a family of three and caused a loss of $21,000 to the elderly person.

He sentenced the accused to four years for arson and nine months for escaping lawful custody. The sentences are to be served concurrently. Naqarase would be eligible for parole after serving three years.

Meanwhile, 36-year-old Raralevu set his wife’s small dwelling house on fire after a domestic dispute in Wainibuka on December 8, 2011.

The couple separated and the wife managed to build a small house using her own resources and assistance from family. Later the accused again moved in with her.

On the night of fire, the couple had an argument and the accused threatened the victim that if she did not return to him, he would set the house on fire.
