The headman of Veiraisi Squatter Settlement, Sairusi Qiolevu, has praised Government for giving them  land to permanently live on.

He said he had been living at Veirasi for the past 40 years and no Government cared for them.

Mr Qiolevu said 80 families lived at Veiraisi and the real name of the settlement was Navakacikoisai.

“It’s now known as Veiraisi because the area was a rice field,” Mr Qiolevu said.

He said they were just been forgotten by past governments.

“No one really cared for us,” Mr Qiolevu said.

He said they had asked past governments, but their requests fell on deaf years.

Mr Qiolevu said Kisoko Cagituevei, the chairman of the Prime Minister’s Resettlement Taskforce, told them about Government’s plan to resettle them to a place where they would own and start afresh.

He said the Naisnu Land Purchase and Housing Co-operation was willing to give more land to relocate the residents.

Currently, he said, Nasinu Land Purchase had given 10 acres of its land at Veiraisi for the resettlement, but it had assured them that they would give more to resettle those from Kilikali.

Mr Qiolevu said the plan would be theirs forever and this was a golden gift from a government that really cared for the people.

“The Prime Minister Bainimarama-led Governmment is a caring one. It cares for all Fijians and not only some,” Mr Qiolevu said.

He said the company had put pegs to mark the area and were just waiting for the survey and the subdivision of the land.
