Most complaints from the sugarcane farmers in the Northern Division have been addressed, the Sugar Cane Growers Council has indicated.

Council senior executive officer Rajendra Prasad said as members of the Committee for Better Utilisation of Lands (CBUL) they have met the farmers the past week.

The CBUL divisional taskforce meeting chaired by Commissioner Northern Division Jovesa Vocea was attended by members and industry stakeholders.

“We had discussions with growers last week as a team with the officers from the Commissioner Northern’s office,” Mr Prasad said.

“We have attended to most of the growers complaints.

“In Seaqaqa the most constraint was the lease issue so we have consulted iTaukei Lands Trust Board and they have met with them.

“We have also found ways in which we can assist them in getting land lease registrations so that they can harvest their cane this year.”

Cane access roads development project have been given out to people to work on.

“People have been given local purchase orders to work on the cane access roads routes which will mean that most of the roads will be done by June 17,” Mr Prasad said.

“The mill will start operations on June 17 and we are excited because we are looking at a good season.

“We’re looking at Fiji Roads Authority to upgrade the roads and FSC is maintaining the railway roads at very strategic places.”
