Ninety-seven students from two Primary and three Secondary schools in Nasinu were given top awards for mathematics yesterday.

The awards ceremony which took place at the Fiji National University’s Nasinu Campus was organised by the Fiji Mathematics Association.

The Association’s President, Vinod Sharan, said the ceremony was to honour students who excelled in maths.

“We organise the Fiji Mathematics Competition and a team competitions,” he said.

“I believe in this rapidly changing world, students who are well versed in mathematics will be able to cope with the challenges and reap the benefits of the opportunities presented by the Fiji Mathematics Association.”

One awardee was 18-year-old Rizwan Khan. He was named the top scorer in Maths for his school Nasinu Muslim College. Rizwan said he feels that the Fiji Mathematics Association should go large with the event.

President of the Fiji Mathematics Association (Central Zone) Rajendra Kumar said the awards also promote students knowledge of mathematics and promotes the subject in schools around Fiji.

“The awards are to encourage students,” he said. “I would also like parents to involve their children in such events.”
