Sigatoka Town Plans 79-year Celebration

Sigatoka Town will celebrate its 79 years of existence as a town on June 3-6 with a small carnival.
The four-day celebration is being organised by the Sigatoka Town Council under the guidance of its chief executive officer, Tulsi Ram.
“We are expecting a lot of people to come along and celebrate since previously we usually had one-day celebrations compared to four this year,” he said.
“These four days give sufficient time for the vendors and stall owners to make enough profit.”
The council is looking into the entertainment side of the celebrations, which will include live bands and performances.
“It will start on Wednesday (June 3) where we will organise Bollywood items and South Indian dance performances,” Mr Ram said.
“On Thursday, we are looking into an iTaukei group, the famous Waikoula Kei Tavua, to perform.”
Friday will be youth night.
“The last day, Saturday has been picked for the awards night when we give recognition to the former councillors and staff who have built the town,” Mr Ram said.
The celebrations will take place on the vacant land situated right next to the town council building.
Future events and facilities
The council is further looking into organising the Coral Coast Carnival later in the year around October.
“We are looking at Lawaqa Park for that event while at the same time we are looking at acquiring some land for the council,” Mr Ram said.
