Bob Snow has assured Team Fiji that security would not be an issue at the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in July.

A long time collector, recorder and publisher of Oceania and PNG Athletics statistics, Snow said the athletes should do the right thing, follow the rules and enjoy the Games.

“Before the 1991 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, there were the same concerns,”he said.

“The Government declared a ‘state of emergency’ to allow the Police and Army personnel to provide protection all of the time. The criminals disappeared overnight as they knew when they were outnumbered.

“I was staying at a hotel with many of the athletics officials. We were picked up each day in a mini-bus and taken to the Sir John Guise Stadium. We would have an armed guard with sub-machine gun there to protect us. It was not needed, but it was just a public relation exercise to put all at ease. The soldiers seemed to be the ones with the biggest smiles and best jokes.

“During the course of the 1991 Games the Port Moresby crime rate was at its lowest in living memory.

“Nobody can guarantee that it will be exactly the same this time, but I do know that the Government is very aware of the public perception of “danger” in Moresby.

“They will do everything they can to ensure nothing happens to any guest or PNG citizen during that time.

“I’ve been to PNG many times and lived there for 15 years. I’ve never had any trouble. You learn to obey the team leaders and don’t go out at night, and concentrate on doing your best on the track and in the field, and all will be very good.

“I was in PNG for two months earlier this year. I had absolutely no trouble whatsoever. For the first month I stayed at a hotel near the Taurama Leisure Centre (where swimming will take place). The security guards will not let me go outside to get a taxi – they do it for me. One of the guards is a three time SPG gold medal boxer – Jack Willie (gold in his division in 2003, 2007 & 2011). He also won the Oceania title three times.”
