The Fiji Business Forum organised by the Suva Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been scheduled to be held in July this year.

This follows a lapse of one year where the chamber did not hold this annual forum the past year because of the Elections in September.

The forum is held in preparation for the chamber’s submission to the national budget.

Chairman of the organising committee, Arvind Maharaj, said the forum in past had been very instrumental in ensuring key policies were included in the national budget.

This was highlighted during the Suva Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual general meeting held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva last night.

Increased discussion

The chamber intends to increase its discussion with Government and policy formulation processes.

As a beginning, the chamber had invited the Minister for Finance and the Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, after the AGM to respond to concerns of the business community.

The re-elected president of the Suva Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nur Bano Ali, said this was so that they could pro-actively contribute to the refining of policies affecting businesses.

“In this way, we want to create a thriving business and private sector which is the sign of a growing and healthy economy,” she said.

“This has been acknowledged over and over by many governments, albeit without necessarily the complementary action that is vital for their effective functioning.

“It is very important that policies effecting business and trade are clearly thought through and the parameters defined for effective implementation.”

Ms Ali urged the business community to take responsibility to provide an educated feedback to the regulators for the refinement of policy.
