Travelling to different countries had inspired Jyoti Singh with her designs but Fiji was close to her heart and thought it would be a privilege to start from where she grew up.

Mrs Singh is one of the designers who will showcase their lines at this year’s Fiji Fashion Week. She will be displaying her two lines – resort wear on Thursday and evening wear on Saturday.

“I have been fortunate to live in different countries and experience a variety of cultures, starting from my humble roots in Fiji. First stop was Singapore before moving to London, the fashion capital,” she said.

“It was probably the walks along Oxford and Bond Street that ignited the fashion flame. My husband’s career took us back to Singapore which allowed me to pursue my interest in events through a business degree.”

She said in 2011 the travel juggernaut took them to Melbourne, and the flame of fashion was stoked again between all the lanes and designer boutiques.“As my husband and children settled in work and school life I knew the time had come to pursue my dream.”

Inspired by the glorious opulent fabric in Singapore and local designers in Australia she decided to take up a fashion design course and studied Fashion Design at the Melbourne School of Fashion and ventured out in the world of fashion.

Her husband, Rohan Singh, speaking from a business man’s perspective, said Fiji’s local market was doing well in terms of development compared to other countries.

Mr Singh is the managing director for an American corporate and international company called Northern Trust.

“What is really exciting to see is the fact that they are catching up so quickly, they are getting a lot of international attention and a lot of people in Singapore know about Fiji Fashion Week so I think it’s quickly establishing itself, though it is not quite up to the level of Singapore, New York and other big countries, I don’t think it will take long to reach up to that standard,” he said.
