Firearms are not an option for Fijian Police, says Commissioner Bernadus Groenewald. Instead, he prefers non-lethal methods like Taser guns to deal with violent crime situations.

The issue of weapons for Police was one of the questions raised at the Commissioners public talanoa session in Nadi yesterday.

Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industries President Dr Ram Raju had raised the issue in light of the recent Aerotown Mobil Service Station robbery earlier this month.

Police confronted masked robbers with sticks and stones, a scenario the Commissioner had described as ‘embarrassing’.

He said this painted a poor picture of the Fiji Police Force.

“Definitely, I think that if we look into the incident that happened a month ago in Nadi, the crime scene approach by the police was totally unprofessional,” he said.

“I have noticed that and will do a proper evaluation of the scene approach, and we will adapt our training in terms of how a policeman is supposed to approach a scene of crime.”

Commissioner Groenewald said talks were in place for the provision of taser guns to help deal with similar situations.

“We are looking towards possibly introducing a non-lethal way of arming policemen by the means of what we call taser guns,” he said.

“I have all the information and I’ve already submitted a report to our Minister. That’s a concept of an electric impulse that’s been shot out by this taser gun and the person has no control and goes down.”

He said when used on an individual, their sensory nerves and motor nerves would experience shock, resulting in uncontrolled muscle tightening.”

He said this would give Police time to arrest perpetrators.
