In Fiji almost every person throws aware 1.5 kilos of rubbish every day but the world figure or bench mark is 0.5 kilo per person.

The Assistant Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Lorna Eden, said rubbish was everybody’s business.

Mrs Eden said: “Rubbish is everybody’s business and it’s not only our council’s business to pick up our rubbish and dispose of it in a proper way.  In our homes we should always be bit more aware.

“We should help the council by separating our recyclable rubbish to assist the council. It is a fact that in Fiji almost every person throws aware 1.5 kilos of rubbish every day but the world figure or bench mark is 0.5 kilo or outside of Fiji.

She visited both landfills in Savusavu and Labasa son Monday and was pleased there was no foul smell and flies.

“There is a lot of work being put in to control our waste but like I said rubbish is everybody’s business and every households should control their rubbish are little bit better,” she said.

“About 28 per cent of the council budget is allocated to waste management probably for all the council’s in every town.”
