Seniors Aged 68 Can Apply

Senior citizens who are 68 years old can now apply for the Fijian Government’s Social Pension Scheme from July this year.

This is after the Ministry of Children, Women and Poverty Alleviation reduced the age limit from 70 to 68 years.

“The age is to be reduced to 68 years from July this year (2015).The Social Pension Scheme was directed to senior citizens aged 70 years and above, that are not beneficiaries of superannuation or other Government assistance,” Minister Rosy Akbar said.

The senior citizens cared for under this scheme receive a monthly allowance of $50.

“There is an increase in cases where older persons have been abandoned, rejected and treated with cruelty even within their own homes. The National Ageing Policy through National Council for Older Persons will ensure the inclusion and empowerment of senior citizens in their homes and communities,” Ms Akbar said.

“The Ministry strongly urges families to look after their elderly, to show respect, care and compassion to senior citizens as they are the ones that have contributed to the development of their communities and this nation. Through increased awareness, the Ministry will continue to reiterate these messages to the younger generations and communities at large.”

Currently 12,720 senior citizens are making use of the scheme.
