Shipping Fares And Cargo Rates Up For Review

Passengers can now look forward to some consistency in the local shipping fares and freight charges to and from outer islands.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Commander Francis Kean revealed this during a press conference in Suva yesterday.
This comes after Cabinet endorsed the report on the outcome of the consultations on the review of shipping fares and freight charges for the maritime shipping industry in Fiji last month.
“Now that the new shipping fares and freight charges will strictly be monitored under Fiji Commerce Commission (FCC) with the support of Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) and the ministry, we will have some uniformity for our passengers,” Commander Kean said.
He said the endorsement agrees that the Fiji Commerce Commission Report on the Review of the Shipping fares and Freight Charges for the Fijian market be adopted and implemented.
“It also endorsed that Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) spearheaded the implementation of a standard manifest for all cargo to be adopted by ship operators trading in Fiji.”
He said a schedule of the new shipping fares and freight rates would be made available to the general public by FCC through the relevant Price Control Order.
“Government through FCC and MSAF will implement the recommendations of this report with effect from July 1,” Commander Kean said.
