Leawere Was Transparent: Apted

Defence lawyer John Apted yesterday made submissions for his client, Mikaele Leawere, before High Court judge Justice David Alfred.

This follows the Attorney-General’s Office challenging the Electoral Commission’s decision to award SODELPAs vacant seat in Parliament to Mr Leawere.

Mr Apted in Mr Leawere’s defence argued he was not involved in alleged corrupt acts levelled against him and as evidence submitted a letter to the Electoral Commission confirming his availability.

The letter was on the official Fijian Teachers Association’s letterhead which titled him as general secretary of the association at that time.

Mr Apted added his client was transparent about his position and the Electoral Commission was aware of his position and awarded the seat to him.

He said Mr Leawere did not appoint himself nor was he sneaky about it.

Mr Apted also claimed that the Attorney-General could not sign the petition in this matter as he is also a Member of Parliament.

The hearing has been adjourned and will continue today.
