Sewer Stench Unbearable: Residents

Nearby residents along the Wainivula creek near the Nabua Bridge are now frustrated with the continued stench emanating from the broken sewer line at the bridge.

Kamla Prasad, 46, who has been living in the area for more than 10 years, said, “We can’t take it anymore; the smell from the sewer line is just polluting to the air we breathe, and my concern is the health of the little children.”

Ms Prasad said they had not received any help from the Ministry of Health concerning the smell.

“Anybody who goes past this place will smell the foul air from the sewer line but still nothing has been done; we were told not to throw our rubbish in the river but the waste being drained from the sewer pipe is more than our household rubbish,” she said.

The smell has been constantly there for more than two months now and has affected those living close to the sewer line.

Roadside vendor Mereseini Tomuse, who sells oranges at the Cunningham Road directly opposite the Nabua bridge said, the stench was unbearable. “I have been selling here for more than a month and the smell is really overbearing,” she said.

Meanwhile Melvina Swami, who has been living in the area the last 30 years, said they had seen no changes in the stench.

“The smell sometimes comes out really strong during a hot dry weather and it’s really frustrating especially when we have visitors in the house,” she said.

Meanwhile Water Authority of Fiji chief executive officer Opetaia Ravai yesterday said they will make a statement on the issue soon.
