A Patriotic Fijian’s Toyota Levin

S

harneel Prasad, born and raised in Nakasi, loves being creative and doing something different from others.

He developed love for rugby in high school. He is not really a car enthusiast and has never attended any car shows or rallies to admire what others have.

However, he is always fond of creating something out of simple looking machines into something that stands out and becomes an eye catcher.

He has been spray painter with Carpenters Motors from 2004 -2010 and still works for Carpenters Motors as a technical staff member in automotive paints division.

While on holiday in 2009, he spotted a car covered in Silver Fern and explains that anyone looking at the car will instantly think of the All Blacks or New Zealand flag.

It is where he conceived this idea of painting his car with the features of Fiji Flag.

This wasn’t going to be simple with Fiji’s flag being so colourful and the task was enormous.

He was adamant that no part of the flag will be done with vinyl cut outs or stickers. He was going to Spray Paint it all.

After six months of hard work and uncounted hours, he managed to paint every bit of the flag on his Toyota Levin.

He was well aware of the quality of the paint that he was using, METALUX 2, which he believed will not let him down.

Today he proudly drives around in his Levin covered with the Flag of Fiji and says that his hard work has paid off.

This will also act as a momento once a new flag is hoisted on October 10 replacing the current one.

NI BULA is his number plates greeting everyone as it passes.

Sun INTERVIEW – Sharneel Prasad

What’s so special about your vehicle?
I believe it’s the first car in Fiji to be painted resembling the Fijian Flag and incorporates Fiji Rugby features to show the pride I have. Every time when Fiji wins a tournament, I take it out for a spin and thus making it an attractive on road feature.
It is special because it’s running the standard 5A engine, however, the exterior paint job makes it loved by many.

Your first vehicle?
This is my first vehicle
Who taught you to drive?
My dad!
Your Dream vehicle?
I want to drive a Lamborghini once irrespective of Year of Manufacture and model.

Prefer manual or automatic?
My car is auto but I prefer manual
Most memorable roadtrip?
Around viti levu after the paint was completed on my car

What do you always have in your vehicle?
A range of CDs as I love to listen to music as I drive around

Favourite movie vehicle scene?
2 Fast 2 Furious
What do you listen to in your vehicle?
I mostly listen to Pop Music
What annoys you the most about other drivers?
There are many impatient drivers tooting and trying to overtake and squeeze in traffics

One road code rule you would want to change?
Maybe regulating body should authorise use of certain modifications such as tints so that car lovers like me can match the colour scheme with correct tinting’s
Traffic in Suva….what’s your take on it?
There should be a study done and long term strategy is needed to improve traffic congestions and where possible create double lanes.
The bottleneck needs to be identified and addressed.
