Province Marks Special Day

The Macuata Day has been hailed by Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere a success.

“The event involved the people of Macuata from all the districts come together as one,” he said.

Similar sentiments were shared by the Roko Tui Macuata, Sitiveni Lalibuli. He said the main objective of the event was to enable the province to collect its provincial levies.

“Since the province has not been effective in collecting its annual levies the four-day event was organised to raise funds for this purpose,” Mr Lalibuli said.

He said more than $600,000 was raised during the four-day event.

Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame said fine handicrafts, traditional mats, fans, baskets and many more items that the women of Macuata were renowned for were displayed.  He said the event was also aimed at conserving their mother tongue dialect and culture; these were important as it depicted their culture and origin.

The four-day celebration involved more than 12 districts in many cultural activities.

Ratu Wiliame said it was amazing to see all the people of Macuata coming together for a good purpose.
