The Fiji National University’s Environment Department together with ANZ Bank undertook some environment work Saweni Beach in Lautoka yesterday.

The team cleaned up the beach and planted mangrove seedlings while making sure that everybody also had fun.

With the theme, ‘Plant a tree, reduce the heat’, the volunteers showed up in numbers to give back to the environment.

Dr Ajantha Perera, the Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental Science, Lautoka Campus, was happy with the outcome.

“Saweni is a very valuable environment for Lautoka and for Fiji because of tourism but it represents an area where development is happening and we need to protect this environment,” Dr Perera said.

“In the past many people have used Saweni; they have just dumped their garbage here and it is destroying the mangroves.

“The only way to restore is to get the participation of all the institutions to work together.

“We have decided to invite the corporate sectors, as part of their corporate social responsibility in this kind of work,” she said.

Dr Perera said the purpose was to create enthusiasm for environment protection as World Environment Day was coming soon.

“I was explaining to the students the value of the mangroves so they can go back with a lot of knowledge and feeling for the environment.”

“Fiji is suffering a lot from climate change and people need to do something about it as Fiji is a developmental hub,” she said.
