United States Revokes Ban On Fiji Arms

The United States government has revoked the ban on the sale of military equipment to Fiji.

Although the Fijian Government sources could not confirm this, overseas media have reported that an announcement was made last Friday in the Federal Register that the change in the defence trade policy was a result of Fiji’s “credible and democratic elections” last September.

The ban came into place following the events of 2006.

The Minister for Immigration, National Security and Defence, Timoci Natuva, declined to comment until an official statement was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Obama administration has stepped up US engagement with Pacific island nations as it vies for regional influence with China, according to AAP.

AAP also stated that in October last year, the US said it was exploring opportunities to resume engaging with Fiji’s military, including in training exercises and co-operating on issues of global concern.
