Chand Warns On Social Media

Civil servants must be totally focused on serving the public during working hours, says Permanent Secretary for the Public Service Commission Parmesh Chand.

This follows incidents where civil servants were seen uploading pictures and updating posts on social media sites during working hours.

Mr Chand has warned that civil servants are not to engage in personal social media activities in their offices.

“There are no specific policies regarding social media. However, civil servants are bound by the Civil Service Code of Conduct which states that all employees must at all time behave in a way that upholds the Public Service Values and the integrity and good reputation of the public service,” he said.

“Each public servant is accountable to their respective Permanent Secretaries or departmental heads. They have their individual work plans and performance requirements. The provision of quality and timely public service delivery is at the core of each public servant’s focus and work activities.”

He said while social media was a great tool for information sharing that could assist officers in their work of servicing to the public, officers are reminded to refrain from using social media for personal reasons.

“We are focused on building a modern civil service that is able to utilise new technology. We should remain mindful at all times that there are high standards and efficiencies to maintain.”
