New Lease Of Life For Young Heart

Twenty-six children diagnosed with congenital heart defects met Minister for Women, Children & Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar at Colonial War Memorial Hospital yesterday.

The minister paid a visit to the hospital to meet the children.

“There are many families who are not able to afford this kind of operation. I am grateful to the team in supporting 26 families because if we look into this an average cost for a child to be operated is about $30000. This is a great help for them,” Ms Akbar said.

“We got associated with the Children’s Heart Foundation in March where the ministry supported the Walk for Life by Michael Fong. He was raising funds and since then we were building Children’s Heart Foundation. We were told that there were many children in the country that need treatment and we are very grateful to the international team from Australia.

“Apart from conducting treatment on the 26 children the team said there is a need for more awareness conducted so that people do not lose their loved ones through these diseases.

“I think the donor institute is doing a great job. The ministry is looking forward in supporting them ensuring that there is not only awareness created amongst families and across the country.”

Janita Reddy could not hold her emotions, describing how she felt about her child receiving the operation to improve her life.

She came all the way from Malolo, Nadi, for the operation.

“This is something big for us. We could not really afford this. They are good to me and I really appreciate this. Through this operation she will live long,” Mrs Reddy said.

“These days it is really hard to get operations done. I would like to thank the Bainimarama Government for helping people. This is something unbelievable. I always used to pray about my child and finally she’s getting what we wanted,” she said.
