The Vodafone Fijian Under-20 team coach, Frank Farina, was happy with his side’s performance despite the team’s 1-8 loss to Germany in Christchurch, New Zealand, yesterday.

It was the side’s first match in the FIFA U20 World Cup.

“I was pleased with our performance. We did not lose discipline and structure and that was important,” Farina said.

“It was 14 to 15 minutes before Germany got their first goal. Germany were getting possession, but not hurting us.

“Playing Germany is a new level for my players; we knew it was always going to be difficult. There was a big improvement by my team in the second half.

“My players were not really nervous because they did not know what to expect, instead there was a lot of excitement.”

Germany led 6-0 at half-time. Striker Iosefo Verevou scored for Fiji early in the second half.

Having had a taste of what it is like to play on the world stage; Farina said the players were hungry for more.

“They have a craving for more exposure and playing Germany is something they will always remember and talk about,” he said.

“It was a great learning curve and experience for my team. They gave 92 minutes of good football. There will always be some mistakes, but as long as there is 100 per cent effort that’s okay.”

Meanwhile, Germany coach Frank Wormuth said Fiji caught them offguard in the second-half.

“We are content with the result, especially the first-half. It took time for us to settle but the set-piece goal [to open the scoring] helped,” Wormuth said.

“In the second-half we were surprised because Fiji put us under pressure. Fiji played better and better in the second period and pressured us.”

Fiji’s next game against Honduras on Thursday at 4pm at Christchurch Stadium, New Zealand.
