Six players from the Yamacia Rugby Club in Navosa are making instant impact for the Poroporo Rugby Club in New Zealand.

Mosese Mawalu, Sunia Vosikata, Apimeleki Mocekula, Sevuloni Moceinacagi, Ulaisi Sauvocia and Emosi Togovaki helped Poroporo win their first match against Ruatoki 39-10 in the Bay of Plenty Division One competition last month.

Mawalu scored two tries and Vosikata scored one to lift their new team to victory.

Yamacia RC coach David Dakuitoga said this would not have been possible if it were not for God and Poroporo RC director Waata Heathcote.

“A friend of mine David Mayes introduced me to Waata who told me he was looking for Fijians to lift the profile of his team,” Dakuitoga said.

“It was hard to get the boys visas because there had been problems of players applying for visas to play in New Zealand only to find out that they aren’t good. They had their first game last weekend and helped their team win their first game after they had lost three games in a row at the start of the season.

“The boys know this is another way for them to provide for their families and help put food on the table,” he said.
