The students and teachers of Nadi Muslim College have taken on the challenge to tackle Non Communicable Diseases.

Through this initiative, the school management has invested in a full gym set worth $3000 for student and teachers to use.

This was made possible with the assistance from ATH Vodafone Foundation who donated $2500. The remaining $500 was given in from the school via its physical education department grant.

The teacher in charge of the school’s physical education, Pita Molaidua, said: “This is for everyone and not just for students who take part in sporting activities as we encourage girls to use this too.

“This is an income-generation projection under the Ministry of Youth and Sport Duke of Edinburgh scheme.”

Students will pay $1 for a session and use the equipment either during their lunch hour or an hour after school. Teachers are also encouraged to take part in the physical activities to reduce the risks of NCDs within the school community.

“So far it has been on trial and the students really enjoy it and teachers look forward to the official operation of this,” Mr Molaidua said.

“We would like to thank the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the scheme and the ATH Vodafone Foundation for their thoughtful contribution.”

The school plans to start a Zumba class as well.

“This allows other students who may be hesitant to use gym facilities to take part in physical activities as well,” Mr Molaidua said.

The school will also look at setting up a special room dedicated for the gym equipment. The gym set consists of a bench, iron set, home-based gym with curl bar, 10kg to 20kg iron plates, gym balls, a stopwatch and a whistle.
