Students Rushed To Hospital After Road Crash

Police Special Constable Ilaimi Nasavulagi, 54, said his fatherly instincts kicked in when he saw the grey Toyota Succeed registration number HV 644 veer off the road.

“The van overtook us and veered off the Olosara Road junction outside of Sigatoka and plunged into a small pond with four school students in it,” he said.

Constable Nasavulagi confirmed that the student who had received injuries was a teenage boy.

Mr Nasavulagi was a passenger in a brown Toyota Fielder which the driver of the van tried to overtake.

He said the accident was possibly caused by overspeeding.

“The van driver was possibly driving above the speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour.”

“We were about to turn into the Olosara road junction and got a shock when this driver overtook us, it was lucky that we hadn’t turned or we would have been involved in the accident too,” he said.

He said his first thought was to assist the students who were in the vehicle.

“When I saw what had happened I ran to help them, but the driver was also quickly bringing the kids up the road with the injured teenage boy limping in pain,”he said.

“My heart went out to them because I have two stepchildren of my own and I felt really sorry for those children being in such a scary situation.”

He said passers-by kindly assisted in transporting the students to the Sigatoka Hospital for treatment.
