The Uruguay Rugby Union wants their national team to play the Telecom Fijian Warriors on an annual basis.

The invitation was extended to the Warriors team manager Taniela Domoni by URU president, Sebastian Pineyura yesterday.

This was after the Warriors beat Uruguay XV 44-22 in their third game to remain undefeated on tour.

Domoni said it would benefit the players if the annual competition get the nod from the Fiji Rugby Union.

“The Uruguay Rugby president is requesting if we could have this competition annually,” Domoni said.

“This is because we have to defend two titles after defeating Uruguay twice (44-22, 30-22) and Argentina Pampas (23-21).

“He will take it up with the Fiji Rugby Union. It would be good for our local players to play international teams on annual basis.”

Meanwhile, Vodafone Flying Fijians head coach John McKee applauded the concept and said they would need financial support from World Rugby.

“This would obviously help in the development of our local players It is really important for our players to be exposed to international competition more often,” McKee said.

“However, the cost of tours is always a factor and we need World Rugby to help pay for the air fares and Uruguay Rugby for accommodation and other expenses.

“I would certainly like to see our players develop a lot more especially playing internationally.

“But with regards to the Warriors win over Uruguay, it is very pleasing to see the progress the players have made after the Pacific Rugby Challenge in Suva in March.” The Warriors lost to the Pampas 17-9 in that final.

The Warriors arrive at 3.55pm at the Nadi International Airport tomorrow.
