Vessel productivity at our ports has improved by 70 per cent since the implementation of the public-private partnership (PPP) in Fiji Ports Terminal.

This has been highlighted by Permanent Secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism and acting Permanent Secretary for Public Enterprise, Shaheen Ali.

Mr Ali said vessel turnaround times have been reduced from 36 hours to 22 hours.

“Reduction of vessel berthing time from six hours to one hour or less, time taken for customers to deliver or pick up containers has been reduced to 15 minutes,” Mr Ali said.

The improved turnaround times come at a time when Fiji Ports Terminal has introduced efficient IT and data documented systems which had been lagging before the PPP.

The introductions are on Yard Planning System, Ship Planning System and in six months time, the Bulk and Break Bulk system.

Fiji Ship Owners and Agency Association (FSOAA) chairman Jeffrey Lin said these initiatives were proving positive for the shipping stakeholders.

“We’re heading in the right direction,” Mr Lin noted.

“Efficiencies have improved as evident by the quick turnaround of imports containers delivered from the wharf after discharge.

“It is obviously a work in progress and FSOAA will continue to work with FPTL to find solutions that will be mutually beneficial to all parties.”
